Bobo tribe Butterfly Mask from Burkina Faso

This very large Butterfly mask is from the Bobo people in Burkina Faso. It was carved from one large piece of wood with a horn added to the front and then accented in rich natural earth colors using beautiful geometric patterns, front and back.  Butterflies are an indication of a very successful crop, so this mask might be used in a dance to assure a good crop.
